Exclusive: Neighbours star Georgie Stone discovered show axe news on Twitter

According to Georgie Stone, she didn’t learn that Neighbours was cancelled until she saw the news on Twitter.

News of Neighbours’ cancellation by Channel 5 first appeared in UK media on the evening of Sunday, February 5 (Sunday morning in Australia). A few of the actors on set were taken aback by the announcement.

The media’s first reports that the show will cease on June 10 were confirmed to the actors and crew later that day. The actors huddled together to discuss the devastating news. The actress playing Mackenzie Hargreaves, Georgie, spoke exclusively to Digital Spy about the show’s cancellation. That’s a shame, indeed. This made me feel really down and out.

It was on Twitter where I first learned of the news. Until one of the producers called me, I had no idea if it was true. It’s not fun to find out you lost your job on Facebook.

While I knew I would be leaving the show this year, it saddened me to think that future young actors wouldn’t have the same opportunity.

Digital Spy has learned that in 2021, the Neighbours cast and crew were informed that Channel 5 had only agreed to a one-year contract renewal, far shorter than previous extensions, and that the show’s future was questionable.

The cast was not informed of the show’s cancellation until after it had already been widely reported. George also had this to say about Neighbours: “I don’t know where I’d be without it. I wouldn’t have as much expertise in my field or as much enthusiasm for my work.

For decades, this was the place of residence for the cast and crew, and I felt awful for them.

I feel bad for the viewers, too, because they’ve invested so much time in such a lovely show that could go on for many more seasons. Unfortunately, it has come to an end. Production on the final episode of Neighbours wrapped up last week, and it will premiere on August 1.
